Have you every walked in a bathroom and thought of every curse word know to man because of the rank stench that violated your nostrils?
Anyone that knows me knows I'm semi-OCD/ borderline "germaphobe" and to top it off I have this crazy heightened sense of smell. Because of all that, I absolutely HATE dirty establishments and homes, and it's 50 times worse if there's a funky odor that goes along with the filth. Above all else, nothing is worse than having a dirty kitchen (because that's where the food comes from) and a nasty bathroom (because that's where you're exposing (uh) your private areas).
Now, I know the bathroom is where everyone is supposed to do their business and I'm not pretending it's supposed to smell like roses, but consideration for the next person would be nice. So, in an effort to clean and deodorize the usual culprit of funk - the commode - I found this SUPER EASY, all natural recipe from here to make these amazing little tablets.
Here's what you'll need:
1 C Baking Soda
1/4 C Cirtic Acid
1 Tbsp Hydrogen Peroxide
1/2 tsp Vinegar
15-30 Drops of Your Favorite Essential Oil
Parchment paper or a candy mold
Sheet Pan
Measuring spoons and cups
*Recipe makes about 35 fizzies
Directions (& A Science Lesson):
1. Combine the Baking Soda and Citric Acid in a bowl. Baking Soda is one of the most common household cleaners for EVERYTHING from skin care to pots and pans, plus it neutralizes odors. Citric Acid kills bacteria and cuts through grease and stains.
2. In a glass container, mix vinegar and hydrogen peroxide together. Vinegar and Hydrogen Peroxide works together to clean and sanitize the commode.
3. One Teaspoon at a time, add the liquid mix to the baking soda. If you add it all at once... think 3rd grade science fair volcano. If you don't mind cleaning the mess, then pour it in all at once but I am NOT suggesting that method.
4. Add the essential oil and gently mix it all together. Of course the essential oils will leave your bathroom smelling "so fresh and so clean, clean." Some really great scents to try would be fresh linen, lavender, rosemary, vanilla, peppermint, lemongrass... Whatever floats your boat.
5. Use 1/2 tsp to scoop and mold the mix into small rounds and tap onto parchment lined sheet pan... or you can scoop the mix into a decorative mold if you want to get fancy. Let them dry for a minimum of 4 hours before using or you can leave them out all night. It's up to you.
6. Place the tablets in a jar with a tight fitting lid and place next to your commode. Be sure to label them as you wouldn't want guests to ingest them. *I used an old Bath & Body Works candle jar. These are perfect because you can write on them with a dry erase marker or sharpie (just use rubbing alcohol to remove it).
Easy right? So, the next time things get pungent, after flushing, drop one of these bad boys in and it'll freshen up in no time.
